Why should a student choose the CCSS?
There are many aspects of the College which I find remarkable, all of which indicate, in one way or another, a wholehearted commitment to a personal and bespoke approach to learning. Perhaps I can highlight just a few:
• Very small class sizes, averaging just 5 or 6 students, which create an atmosphere of “learning with an expert friend” rather than being externally directed or force fed information.
• One-to-one sessions, which all of our A-level students have in each subject every week. Whether these individual sessions are spent unravelling a particularly difficult concept, or in exploring a topic which has inspired a special sense of inquisitiveness, the outcome is the same: a real depth of learning is made possible and achieved.
• The quality of relationships between staff and students is built on a thoroughly grown-up and mature sense of respect and a shared sense of purpose. There is a pastoral tutorial style here which supports independence, rather than imposing constraints and checks, and our students flourish in this environment.
What makes Cambridge attractive for an exchange student?
Cambridge is often called a centre of excellence for education, being a famous university city which is well known for its learning traditions and the quality of education provided. The city successfully combines its historic focus on education with more recent developments such as an internationally acknowledged centre of technology and science ("Silicon Fen"). The University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University based in the city also help generate a broad cultural and social experience with excellent theatre, cinema, concerts, exhibitions, art galleries, museums and shops (especially bookshops), eating places, and many other forms of entertainment.
There are great sporting facilities including indoor tennis, top-class sports pitches, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and sports halls in Cambridge, and CCSS students benefit from using all of them. Travel links are excellent, London is only 50 minutes away by train and the international airports at Stansted, Heathrow and Gatwick are within easy reach.
What is the average number of German students at your school per year?
We describe CCSS as a “British international college” : We have about 200-210 students at the College and some 40% are British with the remainder from almost 40 different countries around the world. Usually, we would have about 8-10 German students each year.
