How many students will be in the class of the Abitur exam course?

This depends on how many students arrive, 15 is the absolute maximum, but there might be fewer students.

Do you run Abitur courses during all holidays?

Yes, Abitur classes are available all year round.

Dazu eine Anmerkung von GLS: Manche Teilnehmer möchten sich langfristig aufs Abitur vorbereiten, und je nachdem wann die Abitur-Prüfung stattfindet, kann es Sinn machen, bereits im Herbst den Kurs zu buchen. Manche haben ja bereits im Januar oder Februar Prüfung. Andere wiederum später, so dass die Osterferien genutzt werden können. Wir haben auch Kunden, die nur mündlich in die Prüfung gehen und trotzdem gern den Kurs buchen, weil er einen höheren Anspruch vermittelt und ja auch viel Konversation betrieben wird.

What is the age range/ grade range within the class?

Most students are aged 17 - 19 years old, in the past few years we have noticed that students are coming to the school with a lower level of English. Most Abitur classes now comprise of intermediate (B1/B2) and advanced levels (C1/C2). The students are placed in classes according to their level of English after doing their placement test on the first morning in school, not their ages or particular stage of their Abitur classes in their home countries.

Is the course attended by students from Germany only?

Well, only by students doing the Abitur exam - so mostly German speakers, sometimes Italian students.

Which books and materials do you use?

Teachers have own materials with regards to essay writing and literature, and follow a syllabus designed by the Abitur teachers. They also use Abitur past papers from the Stark series of book.

What is the content of the Abitur course?

The Abitur course takes specific areas of grammar and deals with them in an academic context. Stylistic devices are not covered in General English classes, they are specific to the Abitur classes along with essay writing and literature appreciation and analysis.

Dazu eine Anmerkung GLS: Der Abiturkurs ist hilfreich für die Abiturvorbereitung, da auf bestimmte Grammatikproblematiken eingegangen wird, man Essays schreibt und gewisse Instrumente an die Hand bekommt, wie man Textanalysen durchführt und Fragen entsprechend beantwortet. Das wird so im Standardkurs nicht geboten.

Are the teachers familiar with the content of the Abitur exam?

Most of our teachers have been teaching on our Abitur classes for over 15 years. All have DELTA qualification (= ein Zertifikat der University of Cambridge für LehrerInnen, die Englisch als Fremdsprache unterrichten: mehr) and previous English teaching experience in state schools.

Does the course contain mock/test exams?

Students do not sit mock exams, but they are required to write essays for their teachers to mark and appraise in individual tutorials.

During tutorials the teachers give individual advice to the students on what they need to do to improve aspects of their language awareness and writing skills.
