How does the TOEFL test work?

The process at all test centers around the world is always the same: The test takes about 4 hours with a small 10-minute break after approximately 2 hours. Test takers take the test under supervision and without auxiliary materials such as dictionaries, etc. The entire test is done on the PC, with a headset, including the speaking section.

The tests are at GLS Friday or Saturdays, always following the 2-week preparation course and always from 10.00 - 14.30.

How big is the TOEFL test center at GLS?

GLS has 17 test stations so a max. of 17 people can take the test at a time. It's not a huge exam room with hundreds of people, so it is usually much easier to concentrate than at busier test centers.

Is it possible to search for GLS as a test center?

Yes - if you sign up on the website for TOEFL test, the test center in Berlin will always show where places are available for the required date. It may of course be that spaces at GLS are already full, but you then need only switch to one of the test centers which still has spaces. Even if the test spaces are full at GLS, you can still do the preparation course at GLS. If you want to be absolutely sure that you can complete the course and test with GLS, you should first register and ensure that GLS still has space on the desired test date and then register with us to take the preparation course.

Who teaches the TOEFL courses at GLS?

Mother-tongue lecturers who specialize in TOEFL courses. TOEFL courses are not "normal" English lessons, whereby one learns grammar, vocabulary, etc. - this is important to know, because often callers say "I now have the level B1, but need 100 points, ie B2 level for the TOEFL. Will I have this level after the course? " And the answer is no, because to go up a whole level stage, the course is too short, and above all, it serves other purposes, namely, to specifically prepare people for the test format.

How do we prepare for the test?

Through simulated tests and by an instruction, and by also training things like speed and control because in some parts of the exam very tight timelines apply. In addition, part of the course takes place in the same room as the test so candidates can familiarize themselves with the test setting and feel more assured and less nervous when taking the test.

When do we get the test results?

After about 2 weeks, the result is available online, but it may take another 2 weeks until we get the score report sent by post.

What is the success rate of GLS?

This can be difficult to quantify, since some need 90 points and others only 70. But from the trainers we frequently hear that students get in touch after the course and let them  know how they have done, and the feedback is quite often very good.

TOEFL or IELTS, which is "better"?

We get this question a lot - since many universities recognize both the TOEFL and IELTS, people are sometimes unsure which test to select.

There is little difference in the content, so you can not say the TOEFL is easier or harder than the IELTS. However there is one notable difference:

The IELTS test is a more familiar format, because unlike the TOEFL, it is not on the PC but on paper instead. Futhermore, the speaking section involves a human counterpart, unlike TOEFL where test takers record a message into a microphone.

Language Level and TOEFL Points

The maximum score possible on the TOEFL is 120. For a degree you usually need at least 90 points which corresponds to the level B2: online placement test
